Stephen Downes[Edit][Delete]: Models for Sustainable Open Educational Resources, February 7, 2006
[link: 1 Hits] I am writing from Malmo, Sweden, where I am very far behind on my email and reading. A lot in the last few days. From London, where I attended the Edubloggers Meetup on Saturday, here are some photos. You will recall the paper I posted last week. Here now are the and an MP3 audio recording. The discussion tends to fade in and out (and there was a lot of it) but the main talk should be OK - I had to do a fair amount of remixing because I used my Creative Zen to record - once again, Windows punted my sound driver. Anyhow, it has been busy but exciting; I'm exhausted, but I'll catch up one day, I promise. :) [Tags: Microsoft, Sweden, Podcasting, Flickr] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Josie Fraser[Edit][Delete]: CETIS Accessibility Roundup, Ed Tech UK [Edit][Delete] February 7, 2006
[link: 1 Hits] As described by Josie Fraser, "bumper-crop of useful accessibility resources and events which have been added to the CETIS-TechDis Accessibility site since November." Numerous good links posted by Sharon Perry from the University of Wales and co-ordinator for the CETIS (Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards) Accessibility SIG (Special Interest Group). Dave Cormier, Jeff Lebow[Edit][Delete]: Discussion with Danny Wool of Wikimedia, Ed Tech Talk [Edit][Delete] February 7, 2006
[link: 15 Hits] I haven't listened to this two-parter (Part 1,Part 2, but you just know it has to be good. "He discusses how he got involved with the project, how Wikimedia has designed and managed the Wikibooks project thusfar, and how they are dealing with key issues like validation and funding in an effort to make Wikibooks usable in today's classrooms." Scott Jaschik[Edit][Delete]: Blackboard-WebCT Merger Approved, Inside Higher Ed [Edit][Delete] February 7, 2006
[link: 3 Hits] Just for the (*sigh*) record, the Blackboard - WebCT merger has been formally approved. [Tags: Blackboard, Mergers and Takeovers] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Alan Levine[Edit][Delete]: Podcasting a Meeting About Podcasting, Cogdogblog [Edit][Delete]CogDogBlog [Edit][Delete] February 7, 2006
[link: Hits] As Alan Levine says, "Podcast is the big, electric magic word of the month." This item offers podcasts of a session on podcasting, including educational uses of podcasting, and better, offers links to some resources, including those from Levine's own "Podcasting Whirlwind Tour." Good intro if podcasting is new to you. [Tags: Podcasting] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Derek Morrison[Edit][Delete]: The Online Filling Station Model of e-learning Revisited, Auricle [Edit][Delete] February 7, 2006
[link: Hits] A look at the forthcoming Sony Reader, "the latest in a line of contenders to become the e-book device of choice." Basically, it's an e-book reader that draws a lot from the recent MP3 players, such as the iPod, that have taken the market by storm. The plus? You can upload your own content (and there's a Sony version of the iTunes music store, natch, just for books). The minus? You have to convert your stuff into their proprietary format. Still. Will this product meet the 'good enough' mark to reach widespread acceptance? Maybe not - but we can't be far from one that will, can we? Dave Warlick[Edit][Delete]: Cultivating a Classroom Learning Engine through Information Economics, 2 cents Worth [Edit][Delete]2 Cents Worth [Edit][Delete] February 7, 2006
[link: 1 Hits] Interesting observation on the best strategy for schools in an era when control over content has slipped from their hands. "The content belongs to us. It's controlled by us. ..and we are producing an increasing amount of it. So I suspect that Khosla is right, we will not be able to control the content -- even in our classroom (especially in our classrooms?). Our best bet is to maintain the audience. Think about facilitating a successful classroom by cultivating its students into a learning engine." [Tags: Information, Schools] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

I want and visualize and aspire toward a system of society and learning where each person is able to rise to his or her fullest potential without social or financial encumberance, where they may express themselves fully and without reservation through art, writing, athletics, invention, or even through their avocations or lifestyle.

Where they are able to form networks of meaningful and rewarding relationships with their peers, with people who share the same interests or hobbies, the same political or religious affiliations - or different interests or affiliations, as the case may be.

This to me is a society where knowledge and learning are public goods, freely created and shared, not hoarded or withheld in order to extract wealth or influence.

This is what I aspire toward, this is what I work toward. - Stephen Downes
