Stephen Downes[Edit][Delete]: Cooperation and Competition: National Learning Object Repositories, July 28, 2006
[link: Hits] Another day, another talk in Colombia. Today's talk continued from yesterday and turned our attention to digital repositories. Slides and MP3 audio. You may have had difficulty accessing yesterday's slides; I had a file upload problem. That has been fixed; here are the link to yesterday's slides and audio. Photos coming soon. Tim Lauer[Edit][Delete]: DOPA Watch, Education/Technology [Edit][Delete] July 28, 2006
[link: Hits] I haven't been covering DOPA - the legislation that effectively makes MySpace and blogging in schools and libraries illegal - because I consider it an internal U.S. issue. But Andy Carvin has shown how aggregation is best used by setting up a DOPA news service, for those who want to follow the issue and act against the legislation. Michael Feldstein[Edit][Delete]: Blackboard Patents the LMS, E-Literate [Edit][Delete] July 28, 2006
[link: 7 Hits] This would be funny if it weren't so ridiculous: "The ever-brilliant US Patent and Trademark Office has apparently granted Blackboard a patent for...well...pretty much anything remotely related to learning management systems. As I read it, Blackboard basically owns the patent on any sort of groupware at all that is used for teaching purposes." [Tags: , ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Mark Oehlert[Edit][Delete]: activeCollab: Free Collaboration and Project Management Tool, E-Clippings [Edit][Delete] July 28, 2006
[link: Hits] Cited from the activeCollab website: "activeCollab is an easy to use, web based, open source collaboration and project management tool. Set up an environment where you, your team and your clients can collaborate on active projects using a set of simple, functional tools." [Tags: , ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Brian Lamb[Edit][Delete]: RSS and the Academic Library, Abject learning [Edit][Delete]Abject Learning [Edit][Delete] July 28, 2006
[link: 7 Hits] Discussion and a good set of links on the topic of RSS and libraries. He adds, "There are already librarians at UBC using this technology quite well (check out Sally Taylor's page on Fisheries that subtly employs RSS feeds in a few places), and I'm hoping yesterday's energetic session is the harbinger for some hardcore free-flowing info action in the near future." I want and visualize and aspire toward a system of society and learning where each person is able to rise to his or her fullest potential without social or financial encumberance, where they may express themselves fully and without reservation through art, writing, athletics, invention, or even through their avocations or lifestyle.

Where they are able to form networks of meaningful and rewarding relationships with their peers, with people who share the same interests or hobbies, the same political or religious affiliations - or different interests or affiliations, as the case may be.

This to me is a society where knowledge and learning are public goods, freely created and shared, not hoarded or withheld in order to extract wealth or influence.

This is what I aspire toward, this is what I work toward. - Stephen Downes
