Stephen Downes[Edit][Delete]: Innsbruck, Austria, June 12, 2006
[link: 1 Hits]

So today is the last day of my trip to Austria, an interesting discussion with the good people at the Centre for Social Innovation in Vienna. Sadly FTP issues are preventing me from uploading slides or audio, but I'll get both online when I return to the office later this week. Tomorrow morning it's off to the airport and back home to Moncton. My thanks to everyone in London, Milton Keynes, Manchester, Innsbruck and Vienna for the kind and supportive welcome you have all given me. And while I have spent a lot of this trip wrestling with myself and with my own thoughts and ideas, you have all helped me see some of the wider impact of the work we are doing together. Today's photo is from Innsbruck and the link is to my Innsbruck photo set. Enjoy! No newsletter tomorrow; see you Wednesday. [Tags: , ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Kathy Sierra[Edit][Delete]: Mosh Pit as Innovation Model, Creating Passionate Users [Edit][Delete] June 12, 2006
[link: 1 Hits] Nothing that hasn't been said before (except maybe including 'bravery' as an essential web 2.0 trait - an astute and courageous observation), but you have to admire the way Kathy Sierra is taking some of the essential ideas of new media and making them accessible. Tony Hirst[Edit][Delete]: VC's Forum - Towards a Global Online University (Raw), OUseful Info [Edit][Delete] June 12, 2006
[link: Hits] Blog coverage of the Vice-Chancellor's Forum at the Open University, which I addressed last week. The notes are pretty point-form, but the post as a whole is an accurate reflection of the event. This extract from the discussion captures the flavour of the event: "MR - with 1 million alumni and 200k students, the OU should turn itself into a business... CY - HE sector is likely to have individual institutions failing. HE has the desire to do everything in a vertical organisation. If you can't be world class in a particular area, get someone else to it. SD - what's the goal? To get everybody educated for free? SO ask the question: what do we need to do to move ourselves to wards that goal, or the goal of free education for everybody in the world." [Tags: ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Monika Andergassen[Edit][Delete]: Microlearning 2006, Speed Geeking, TMs weblog;format=brief> June 12, 2006
[link: Hits] Coverage of Microlearning from Monika Andergassen, including this item on Speed Geeking, which I missed (but which would have been a lot of fun). See also more coverage from Daniel Molnar, who was nice enough to give me an unofficial best presentation award ("I want to thank the academy...."). [Tags: , ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Miles Berry[Edit][Delete]: XChange06 - the Challenge of Innovation, Miles Berry : Weblog [Edit][Delete] June 12, 2006
[link: 1 Hits] Miles Berry is blogging Xchange06. This post caught my attention, and in particular: "...chaired by Becta's Vanessa Prittard, who acknowledged that innovation was a 'bottom-up' process, although it also served 'top-down' agendas." And another speaker says, "the logic of education systems should be reversed so that it is the system that conforms to the learnerm rather than the learner to the system." We hear these so frequently, and yet things still remain unchanged... [Tags: ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Susan Smith Nash[Edit][Delete]: Apocalypse in Academia, or Brave New Mega-College, E-Learning Queen [Edit][Delete] June 12, 2006
[link: Hits] Susan Smith Nash considers: "Imagine being in the middle of your junior year and your college suddenly announces it's going belly-up. This is a scenario is increasingly likely to happen as nimble private colleges and aggressive for-profits pull enrollments away from traditional brick-and-mortar campuses." As usual, a podcast accompanied by a short article. [Tags: , , ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Eilif Trondsen[Edit][Delete]: eLearning 2.0: A Broad Perspective, SRI Consulting Business Intelligence [Edit][Delete] June 12, 2006
[link: Hits] PowerPoint presentation describing "eLearning 2.0 characteristics, issues and questions." The presentation mostly looks at web 2.0 and shows some acquaintancew with e-learning 2.0 but doesn't look at it in a whole lot of detail. It's interesting to me because it shows that e-learning 2.0 as a meme has enterd the business intelligence consulting set (which means there's no hope for it now). Joachim Niemeier[Edit][Delete]: The Co-Evolution of SOA and Web 2.0, 7 Days and More [Edit][Delete] June 12, 2006
[link: 1 Hits] I like the diagram, showing clearly what parts of a service oriented architecture (SOA) fit into web 2.0, and what parts don't. [Tags: ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

I want and visualize and aspire toward a system of society and learning where each person is able to rise to his or her fullest potential without social or financial encumberance, where they may express themselves fully and without reservation through art, writing, athletics, invention, or even through their avocations or lifestyle.

Where they are able to form networks of meaningful and rewarding relationships with their peers, with people who share the same interests or hobbies, the same political or religious affiliations - or different interests or affiliations, as the case may be.

This to me is a society where knowledge and learning are public goods, freely created and shared, not hoarded or withheld in order to extract wealth or influence.

This is what I aspire toward, this is what I work toward. - Stephen Downes
