Stephen Downes[Edit][Delete]: Distributed Learning, April 3, 2006
[link: 1 Hits] No, I have not come out of my hiatus - I have a very long way to go before I can think of that. But I did promise in my hiatus FAQ that I would honour my speaking committments, and so here I am in Tennessee to give a talk. Here are the slides and MP3 audio. The talk addresses the usual e-learning 2.0 point of view, but I also reflect a bit on the purpose of what we are doing. It's little enough, and I need to say more - I do want to thank everyone for their kind words and support, and to those special people (you know who you are) who have been there for me and who are now and always in my thoughts. Stephen Downes[Edit][Delete]: Magdalene Islands, April 3, 2006
[link: 13 Hits] I decided that I needed to go away for a while and so spent three weeks on the Magdalene Islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, a place I've always wanted to visit. This is a Flickr photoset from that time - as of right now I've uploaded twelve photos, but I have many more which I will add over the next few days. My time on the islands meant a lot to me and I honestly wish I were back there - I'm trying to find that place, you know, where I can have a meaningful life, where I can be completely engaged and committed and passionate, where I can matter and be important. These pictures will always be special to me, because they will always remind me that I can and sometimes do dare to hope and dream of being something more, and that there are, absolutely, some things worth dreaming about. I hope you enjoy them. [Tags: ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

I want and visualize and aspire toward a system of society and learning where each person is able to rise to his or her fullest potential without social or financial encumberance, where they may express themselves fully and without reservation through art, writing, athletics, invention, or even through their avocations or lifestyle.

Where they are able to form networks of meaningful and rewarding relationships with their peers, with people who share the same interests or hobbies, the same political or religious affiliations - or different interests or affiliations, as the case may be.

This to me is a society where knowledge and learning are public goods, freely created and shared, not hoarded or withheld in order to extract wealth or influence.

This is what I aspire toward, this is what I work toward. - Stephen Downes
