One More Reason ChatGPT Seems Like a Sweetheart
Maha Bali, Reflecting Allowed, 2023/01/26

Here's another example of why it's so important to consider the ethics of AI. Can you imagine what the result would be if Elon Musk owned chatGPT outright, the way he owns Twitter? Would we ever see a response like this: "The Qur'an is a sacred text to Muslims and should be approached with respect and careful study." As Maha Bali asks, "Who trained you to be so sensitive and polite and politically correct?" Indeed.

Beyond the paywall: Alternative value exchanges between publishers and readers
Madeleine White, What's New in Publishing, 2023/01/26

This appears to be a paid placement article in WNP sponsored by paywall company Poole and user-data company Sovrn (though it is not labeled as such). So it's not surprising to see that all the 'alternatives' are nonetheless still walls. Though it's basically advertising, it's still illuminating to look at the various ways companies try to monetize your attention, whether through newsletter walls, survey walls, registration walls, or whatever. And the data ends up in places like Meta. There's probably research work that needs to be done on the increasingly subtle business of paywalls and how the companies tease just enough content to attract views (and hence, potential subscribers) without actually making the content available.

The effectiveness of Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) on intercultural competence development in higher education

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) is "an umbrella term to cover various online teaching and learning approaches that focus on online intercultural interactions and collaboration." It "usually involves the creation of multicultural teams, made up of students from both institutions who connect online to work on group assignments." I would imagine a lot depends on how those teams and assignments are structured. This article looks at whether COIL develops cultural awareness and finds "a significantly bigger increase in intercultural competence for the US experimental group compared to the US control group, supporting our hypothesis that COIL develops intercultural competence." The assessment is based on Cultural Intelligence (CQ), which is defined as "an individual's capability to function and manage effectively in culturally diverse settings," and Multicultural Personality, success in which is defined as "success in the fields of professional effectiveness, personal adjustment and intercultural interactions." After inking its OpenAI deal, Shutterstock rolls out a generative AI toolkit to create images based on text prompts
Ingrid Lunden, TechCrunch, 2023/01/26

According to this article, "customers of Shutterstock's Creative Flow online design platform will now be able to create images based on text prompts, powered by OpenAI and Dall-E 2." Worthy of note is this: "Key to the feature... is that Shutterstock says the images are 'ready for licensing' right after they're made." So to be clear - you don't own the copyright on images you create using the service. They do. This is what they call "ethically created visuals".

An Argument for Project-Based Learning
Nicholas Provenzano, The Nerdy Teacher, 2023/01/26

I used to love working on my 'projects' in school, and so have always had a soft spot for project-based learning (PBL). This article isn't exactly deep, but offers a light and accessible survey of reasons to support PBL in the classroom: active engagement, soft skill work, ownership, class culture, and differentiation.
