Tim Lauer[Edit][Delete]: Scuttle: Open Source Social Bookmarking Tool, Education/Technology [Edit][Delete] January 26, 2006
[link: 6 Hits] I talked about del.irio.us last week, an open source alternative to the del.icio.us social bookmarking tool, but noting that it was offline, contemplated authoring my own. Maybe I don't have to, if this open source tool does the job. Worth noting is an edu-specific version of Scuttle. [Tags: Open Source, del.icio.us] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Christopher D. Sessums[Edit][Delete]: Social Software Presentation, ELGG [Edit][Delete] January 26, 2006
[link: 9 Hits] Nice wiki-based presentation that covers the basics of social software. Not a bad place to start, if this is new to you. Readers interested in this will also want to look at the same author's comments on the emergence of blogs and wikis as social tools (nice reference to MUDs, which I appreciate). Jeff Utecht[Edit][Delete]: Google in China, The Thinking Stick [Edit][Delete] January 26, 2006
[link: Hits] As everybody (absolutely everybody) in the blogosphere has noted, Google has agreed to censor search results destined for China. My question is: if they are so willing to do this in China, could they have done it here? How would we know? Have they already been asked to do so by an unscrupulous government? What would stop them? Google must change its position on this. [Tags: Web Logs, Google, China] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Kate DuBose Tomassi[Edit][Delete]: Stanford On ITunes Is For Everybody, Forbes [Edit][Delete] January 26, 2006
[link: 1 Hits] The author states that it is "an unprecedented move" as Stanford moves with Apple to podcast "a wide range of lectures, speeches, debates and other university content through iTunes." I am at a bit of a loss to figure out what's unprecedented. Podscasting lectures? No, I've been doing that for two years, and I am by no means alone. Allowing free public access to university course content? No, MIT has that pretty much sewn up with OpenCourseWare. Maybe it's just "unprecedented" for Stanford. Or maybe we're seeing celebrity tabloid journalism as it plays out in the field of instructional technology. More here, from Gizmodo (tabloid journalism for gadgets). Brian Lamb and Alan Levine[Edit][Delete]: Beyond The Blog, Flickr [Edit][Delete] January 26, 2006
[link: Hits] This is as creative as it gets and not surprisingly has been listed throughout the edublogosphere. Alan Levine and Brian Lamb use Flickr as a presentation tool, creating a series of science fiction pseudo-covers to illustrate their presentation. Love the classically pulp misspelling of my name. Meprisant[Edit][Delete]: Portable USB Sofftware : A Melange, meprisant [Edit][Delete] January 26, 2006
[link: Hits] List of applications that can be loaded onto a USB memory stick and run on any USB-compliant computer (this way you can have your Firefox even in places where they use only Internet Explorer). Be sure to read the comments for some additional applications and lists. [Tags: Microsoft] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Margaret Maag[Edit][Delete]: Ed-Cast: An International Academic Podcast Repository, Educause [Edit][Delete]EDUCAUSE [Edit][Delete] January 26, 2006
[link: 4 Hits] A very brief item, and no URL (sheesh) but you can find more here. "Through the sharing of podcast lectures and related academic materials, students and faculty members gain access to new sources of expertise and diversity of views to enhance learning and faculty development." I want and visualize and aspire toward a system of society and learning where each person is able to rise to his or her fullest potential without social or financial encumberance, where they may express themselves fully and without reservation through art, writing, athletics, invention, or even through their avocations or lifestyle.

Where they are able to form networks of meaningful and rewarding relationships with their peers, with people who share the same interests or hobbies, the same political or religious affiliations - or different interests or affiliations, as the case may be.

This to me is a society where knowledge and learning are public goods, freely created and shared, not hoarded or withheld in order to extract wealth or influence.

This is what I aspire toward, this is what I work toward. - Stephen Downes
