Tom Hoffman[Edit][Delete]: Turning SIF On Its Head with TinyZIS, Tuttle SVC [Edit][Delete] June 9, 2006
[link: 8 Hits] I am sympathetic with the intent of this post, whih is to replace the Schools Interoperability Format (SIF), "a classic top-down, commercially driven standard, with no uptake whatsoever in the open source world," withg a small and agile open alternative. But I don't like some of the phrasing. This, for example: "weâxTMre hitting an inflection point where the decisive point shifts from creating individual open source applications for schools to figuring out how to make them work together as an integrated system." I would not say 'integrated' - I would say 'connected,' which is something very different. This post also requires a language warning. [Tags: , ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Ewan McIntosh[Edit][Delete]: Assessment is for Learning - So is Blogging, edu.blogs.com [Edit][Delete] June 9, 2006
[link: 6 Hits] It stretches the bounds of assessment a bit, but Ewan McIntosh managed to get in this talk on blogging in any case. I like the example he lists, with links. [Tags: , ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Barbara Ganley[Edit][Delete]: Centering, Connecting and Creating: Transformations in Blogging Classrooms, bgblogging [Edit][Delete] June 9, 2006
[link: Hits] Barbara Ganley weighs in with another good talk. She writes, "enhancing the learning experience for our students is not simply a matter of 'handing out blogs' like notebooks and then standing by to watch the miracle; nor is it a matter of setting up series of strict rules and parameters and methods. By thinking first about the nature of our learning community and our pedagogical framework, and how connecting students to themselves, one another, and the world makes sense in our classrooms, we can take powerful advantage of the connectivity and the transparency of the medium." Graham blogs the talk. [Tags: , , , , ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

I want and visualize and aspire toward a system of society and learning where each person is able to rise to his or her fullest potential without social or financial encumberance, where they may express themselves fully and without reservation through art, writing, athletics, invention, or even through their avocations or lifestyle.

Where they are able to form networks of meaningful and rewarding relationships with their peers, with people who share the same interests or hobbies, the same political or religious affiliations - or different interests or affiliations, as the case may be.

This to me is a society where knowledge and learning are public goods, freely created and shared, not hoarded or withheld in order to extract wealth or influence.

This is what I aspire toward, this is what I work toward. - Stephen Downes
