Marc Canter[Edit][Delete]: Ruckus is Now - Free, February 13, 2006
[link: Hits] Well isn't this interesting. According to this report, Ruckus - the music downloading network marketed to university campuses at $3 per month per student - is now free. Marc Canter observes, "I guess the record labels and publishers feel that this money is free money - and that these kids would just go steal the music anyway." Well, that or listen to it for free on the radio, like they've always done. Back in the days before 'free' meant 'theft'. Rob Reynolds[Edit][Delete]: Five Laws of Product Development for Education in the 21st Century, XplanaZine [Edit][Delete]XPlanaZine [Edit][Delete]Xplanazine [Edit][Delete] February 13, 2006
[link: 1 Hits] Some principles (it's a bit much to call them laws) that sound good but still reflect an 'us delivering to them' mentality. I'd be more interested to know how 'products' (if you will) can empower students to teach themselves. I am sympathetic with the tone Christopher D. Sessums' commentary. Stop thinking in universal principles or laws. "I have found from my own experience (i.e., making lots of mistakes) that attempting to concretize what is naturally fluid and dynamic makes one apear nebbish, or worse, pedantic. I prefer the terms guidelines or reflections; this leaves one open to making changes as required." [Tags: Web Logs, Experience] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Brian Lamb[Edit][Delete]: Don't Call it a Northern Voice Wrap-up. Part One - What Worked, Abject learning [Edit][Delete]Abject Learning [Edit][Delete] February 13, 2006
[link: Hits] Brian Lamb recaps what worked at Northern Voice. Many links, so you can see some of the coverage (there has been a lot, too much to summarize here). Too bad I missed it. But I can only cover so many time zones in a week. [Tags: ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Various authors[Edit][Delete]: Site@School, Sourceforge [Edit][Delete]SourceForge [Edit][Delete] February 13, 2006
[link: 1 Hits] From the school-discuss mailing list: "Site@School is a Content Management System (CMS) to manage and maintain the website of a primary school. It is Open Source Software, licensed under the General Public license." Manage a website without technical knowledge using Word-like editors. Students and teachers can have personal pages on the website. Teachers can check pupil pages before publication. [Tags: Online Learning, Schools, Content Management] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Simon Pockley[Edit][Delete]: Comparison of Harvest Road Functionality with EPrints and Dspace, February 13, 2006
[link: 3 Hits] Simon Pockley introduces this draft table of functional comparison between EPrints, DSpace and Hive, three digital repository applications. He writes, in an email, "First, the table needs user and developer comment. Second, many people have expressed interest in it... I found that users often don't use all functionality and are sometimes unaware of what is available, and developers tend to think that everything works out-of-the-box and does not require complex configuration." MS Word document. [Tags: Learning Object Repositories] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

I want and visualize and aspire toward a system of society and learning where each person is able to rise to his or her fullest potential without social or financial encumberance, where they may express themselves fully and without reservation through art, writing, athletics, invention, or even through their avocations or lifestyle.

Where they are able to form networks of meaningful and rewarding relationships with their peers, with people who share the same interests or hobbies, the same political or religious affiliations - or different interests or affiliations, as the case may be.

This to me is a society where knowledge and learning are public goods, freely created and shared, not hoarded or withheld in order to extract wealth or influence.

This is what I aspire toward, this is what I work toward. - Stephen Downes
