Various authors[Edit][Delete]: Reblog, New Media Consortium [Edit][Delete] September 23, 2006
[link: Hits] Alan Levine writes, in an email, "The open source reBlog software () provides an interface that is both a web-based RSS aggregator, tied with some simple tools to select, tag, annotate, and republish specific stories to a new blog site. It features some good tools for finding related content from across the RSS feed sources." See also: About ReBlogging, Inside the ReBlog (a screencast) and How to ReBlog (an illustrated short guide). Various authors[Edit][Delete]: Brandon Hall Network, September 23, 2006
[link: Hits] Brandon Hall has discovered social networking, and so naturally, has built a social network site that is, as they say, "Myspace.com meets LinkedIn." There is, the email advertisement said, currently no cost to join - but of course, there will be eventually. I guess we can expect special events available only to members advertised around the net. You may wonder why I didn't build something like this - I could easily have done so, and I certainly knew about this sort of approach several years ago. Simply: it's the wrong approach. You don't create a 'newtork' by making everybody go to your house, by charging money to access, by building walls and barriers. Networks are created when each person has his or her own space and autonomy, where communications are free and open. I guess that's not the Brandon Hall way, though.

So what should Brandon Hall have done? It should have spent the same money developing simple distributed applications and services that would allow people to contribute to such a free network. It would actually have gained more had it done so. If I had anything like money or resources, that's what I would develop. [Tags: , ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Alexander Hayes[Edit][Delete]: Auckland : FLNW On The Streets, September 23, 2006
[link: Hits] I like this: "Whilst out and about on Auckland streets today I bumped into a Maori Elder busking so I thought I'd sit down and have a chat about whats happening with young people from his perspective. Hope you enjoy the recording." [Tags: ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Various authors[Edit][Delete]: Language tags in HTML and XML, W3C [Edit][Delete] September 23, 2006
[link: Hits] Some changes in the way XML and HTML declare languages; these may also impact learning object metadata (LOM), which has always been bad at handling language (prefacing each sentence with a 'language string' tag). As for me, well, I am happy, I am really tired of choosing between en-US and en-GB. I don't speak either language, I speak Canadian English. Via email from Dan Rehak. Various authors[Edit][Delete]: Jamendo, September 23, 2006
[link: 1 Hits] This is a plug, because the service really was useful, for Jamendo, a site that hosts Creative Commons licensed music. It's where I found most of the music for my recent Bogota video. The service has also launched a new blog, which is what prompts my current post. [Tags: , ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

Mitchell Weisburgh[Edit][Delete]: PilotEd, PILOTed [Edit][Delete]PilotEd [Edit][Delete] September 23, 2006
[link: 1 Hits] Mitch Weisburgh's newsletter, which I have been reading foir many years, is now a blog. " I've changed my PILOTed newsletter to a blog... Of course, I haven't figured out how (or had time) to put the old newsletters there, they are still accessible [here]. The latest two articles are on the Education Market report by BMO Capital Markets and the Back To School conference that they sponsored." [Tags: , , ] [Comment] [Edit] [Delete] [Spam]

I want and visualize and aspire toward a system of society and learning where each person is able to rise to his or her fullest potential without social or financial encumberance, where they may express themselves fully and without reservation through art, writing, athletics, invention, or even through their avocations or lifestyle.

Where they are able to form networks of meaningful and rewarding relationships with their peers, with people who share the same interests or hobbies, the same political or religious affiliations - or different interests or affiliations, as the case may be.

This to me is a society where knowledge and learning are public goods, freely created and shared, not hoarded or withheld in order to extract wealth or influence.

This is what I aspire toward, this is what I work toward. - Stephen Downes
