Companies and academic institutions spend a lot of money developing and implementing tools for collaboration. So why don't people use them? This short article (13 page PDF) investigates some of the reasons. Sure, the platform may facilitate social presence, but this appears not to be enough. It needs also to serve a need, and too often it doesn't. So participants need to be involved in the planning stages to determine what would fill a need.
