Doug Belshaw: "The overwhelming reason parents send their children to to private schools is to get the examination results to get into elite universities. Those that are successful may get a good education, but they also get to tell a story. It's a kind of shorthand to say you went to Oxford University. Privilege in schooling ends up with privilege in the job market." In other words: private schools ensure that the system isn't fair. That's their purpose.
