I think this is a question worth asking. "Many of the journal articles and especially book chapters are so out of date by the time they have gone through the whole publishing process that it is not worthwhile consulting them anymore." Interestingly, Aisha Stroman asked the members of IT Forum which journals should be read, and which associations joined, by someone just starting in the field (responses from George Veletsianos, Paul Brna, Nick Rushby and Suzanne Stapler). I, of course, suggested this list. But the question is: could lists like this (along with the self-published papers of the authors I link to) replace journals like those?
