The idea is to provide "a cryptographically-verifiable and privacy-preserving mechanism" allowing credential-holders to prove their credentials are recognized. "The specification is designed to interoperate with existing 'trust infrastructures'... while enabling new decentralized ecosystems to be built using verifiable credentials."
