AI is already on campus, writes Marc Watkins. "The danger of AI arriving via update is that it goes unnoticed, undiscussed, and like a lobster in a pot, we may not realize the water was boiling long before our campuses intentionally purchased a single 'AI' tool." Among the better responses, he writes, are Charles Bassett's S.E.C.U.R.E. framework (standing for: security credentials, ethical use, confidential information, use of personal information, rights protection, evaluation of outputs) and Kathryn Conrad's Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights, but even so, these may be impossible to implement. "AI is accelerating and we don't even have basic AI literacy for our professional faculty or staff, let alone for students." I would advise them to get online and start learning about it, but I fear this article is addressed to people who are unable to do even that.
