Helen Blunden reflects on life in the 1980s while lamenting the provision of online learning for students who opt out of attending school in person. "I found this story incredibly sad," she writes. "How can young children elect to opt out completely of having to do anything with other people electing to only interact via a screen?" I can answer that. First, opting out of school isn't opting out of interacting with other people, it's the act of choosing who we will interact with in a more neutral (and safe) context. My world of the 70s and 80s wasn't about recording video of ourselves "hanging out with friends at arcades, going to parties at friends homes and generally having a laugh." It was much grittier than that. The internet would have been a life-saver for me. I will never look back on those pre-internet days with fondness.
