This article delivers exactly what the title suggests. It doesn't go into a lot of detail but it's a good overview of the benefits and risks of self-hosting an LMS. To me, in the end, it depends on your expertise and comfort level managing your own server environment. There's one thing I would add: the risk to your business model when you depend on a hosted provider. Video uploaders, for example, were surprised to find themselves facing thousands of dollars of new costs last week as Vimeo suddenly raised its prices.
