I'm not going to claim to be an expert in how best to teach people how to read, though my experience in other areas suggests to me that there's no one best way to do it. In my own case, I was exposed to a phonics-heavy curriculum, which left me with weak spelling, difficulties with abstraction, and issues with grammar and clarity that I didn't address until high school. On the other hand, phonics helped me become a better speaker and to master accents when studying a second language. Today, when I read, I always hear the sound in my head, and I wonder what it would be like if I went straight from word to concept. Anyhow, despite what the author here says, I doubt that there is an established 'science of reading' - because if there were she would have linked to it somewhere in the article. Wouldn't she?
