I understand why people might have concerns about putting facial recognition technology in schools, but I would like to see better arguments. This article doesn't have them, but one post it links to, this statement by the NYCLU, does. Aside from noting the cost, which at least for the moment is a compelling reason to wait, the arguments are not convincing. The concerns are, of course, "the serious privacy and safety risks." But what are these? "Students will feel like they are constantly under suspicion"...? "Youthful misbehavior or simply hanging out with friends could be criminalized"...? "Students seeking confidential assistance from a counselor or school clinic will be caught in the system's dragnet"... But these aren't the result of the surveillance. All these are unreasonable attitudes that prevail whether or not surveillance exists. Related: RealNetworks offers free facial recognition software for K-12.
