WhatsApp is owned by Facebook but is run as a separate company. It enables encrypted person-to-person conversations. And like Facebook, it can be used to spread fake news. "In some sense it's not that dissimilar to ordinary conversations but what makes it different is the speed with which these things can spread." But look. You don't need technology for this to happen. You just need a receptive and critically defenseless population, as I learned in the small town of Eaglesham. Today, the whole world has become a small town. We need to learn how to make that work.
