Having a nice chat with Casson from Virgin Media today at OEB and I was introduced to Embedly. So I once again had the experience of seeing something for the first time that is immediately obvious, and that everyone else knows about, that I had never heard of. The idea of Embedly is simple: "The Embed Button allows you to allow users to embed your site's content with a single click. Get more impressions from all over the web." They're using it with WordPress. Embedly and others use the oEmbed protocol. "An oEmbed exchange occurs between a consumer and a provider. A consumer wishes to show an embedded representation of a third party resource on their own web site, such as a photo or an embedded video. A provider implements the oEmbed API to allow consumers to fetch that representation."
