I borrowed heavily to attend univerisity, but I don't really fit either of the two categories of student identified by the author, as I spent a lot of time on student activities. Still, every Friday night and Saturday night was spent working at 7-Eleven. So yeah, the core observation remains true: "The key fact, she said, is that students who borrow 'are different,' and that when they have less time or inclination to participate in student activities, 'they are missing some of the quintessential college experience.'"
