This very interesting article falls under the heading of brain-based learning and makes the point that there are non-textual, emotion-based processes of memory that operate unconsciously. I would extend this to say that such processes are sensation based, and that they operate, within a neural network, through a process of pattern recognition, which I have tried to formalize with an account of similarity theory (this was, in fact, the topic of my erstwhile PhD thesis, which the committee declined to examine, preferring a safer dissertation on text-based 'mental contents (which, in the end, I declined to write) - one day I'll scan what I did write and post it here).
