Premier Programming is giving away its text-reading software for free to schools and libraries in the hope that parents will purchase a version for home use. Not a bad marketing strategy. The competitor's software sells for as much as $US 1895. But do you really need a text reader that speaks 170 languages? "Something that happens with mature companies is that they don't want to compete on price but on features," said Peter Stokes, executive vice president at Eduventures.com.
