Would a smart toilet leak your private info?
Hanae Armitage-Stanford, Futurity, 2023/03/08

The answer to this question is 'yes', based on everything else we know about the technology industry and commercial health care providers. But even worse, the odds are excellent that although most features, like, say, flushing, would be free at first, if you want to keep using them, you would have to pay a monthly subscription.

Madrid

Sorry about the missing issues of OLDaily. Here is a link to my photos of Madrid to compensate. Also, proper audio and video from my presentation in Madrid are now available. The people in Madrid were lovely; my health, unfortunately, was not (nothing serious, just some med side-effects). So I've been a bit distracted.

I don't want to log in to your website

I try very hard to ensure there's nothing between the link you click in this newsletter and the content it points to - no registration, no paywall, nothing (I even try to link directly to PDFs rather than to the information page). And my attitude to sites that require a login is precisely this: "While I sympathize with the struggles of the media business, I am just going to point out something obvious: not reading is easier than reading - and way easier than logging in." I would also point out that, from my experience, you're not missing out on anything if you just skip the login-required sites (except maybe a pile of spam).

The Metaverse Standards Forum
Metaverse Standards Forum, 2023/03/08

Just something people should know exists. "Open to any organization at no cost, the Metaverse Standards Forum provides a venue for cooperation between standards organizations and companies to foster the development of interoperability standards for an open and inclusive metaverse." Basically, they're not a standards body, but a forum for providing requirements to standards bodies. They're still just ramping up, but they've grown to include pretty much every company in the business, except Apple. This is also a pretty good reminder that even though something (like, say, the metaverse) is no longer the fad of the day, it might still be something substantial and important.
