End of the Line for UKOLN and CETIS?
Dec 21, 2012
Commentary by Stephen Downes

Two vaguely worded announcements appeared today on the UKOLN and CETIS websites. As cited by Brian Kelly, "In response to the Wilson review of Jisc, the organisation has confirmed that it will only provide core funding to the UKOLN Innovation Support Centre, up to July 2013 but not beyond." Same deal for CETIC. (Note that I changed Kelly's headline, contrary to my usual practice, because the phrase "looking ahead" seems to deliberately obfuscate the content of the messages.) I know it's another country and all that, but let me be clear that to my mind UKOLN and CETIS have been two of the most important organizations in the world of online learning, period, and that should their funding be discontinued it would be a significant loss to the field.

Re: End of the Line for UKOLN and CETIS?

More "Change of track" then "End of the Line" I hope.

Thank you for your kind comments; both UKOLN and CETIS are justifiably proud of
their respective contributions to online Teaching Learning and Research.

We have our annual conference scheduled for March 2013 where the "new" CETIS will be launched and discussions with partners (including JISC) are progressing well.

I've personally been overwhelmed by the positive comments and support that we (CETIS) have received from the wide international education community. [Comment] [Permalink]

Re: End of the Line for UKOLN and CETIS?

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for your kind and encouraging words, they are very greatly appreciated indeed. We certainly live in interesting times! While these changes will certainly be challenging, we sincerely hope that this will be a chance for a "new future" rather than the "end of the line" for both CETIS and UKOLN. As Paul has already said, we are exploring other models of innovation support with additional partners and are confident that CETIS will be around for some time in the future. So here's wishing you all the best for the holidays and looking forward to new opportunities in the New Year!

All the best

Don't forget OSSWatch.

About fifty people at risk of unemployment, and there will be many more. HR departments in universities throughout the UK are rapidly learning about the new corporate Jisc, a hissing and a byword for the universities involved. An enviably effective rebranding exercise! [Comment] [Permalink]
