Blackboard To Buy Elluminate, Wimba For $116 Mln
Kathy Schwiff,
Wall Street Journal, July 7, 2010.
Blackboard is buying Elluminate and Wimba, two popular online conferencing systems, for a total of $116 million in cash. The purchase was reported in the Wall Street Journal (from press releases) as well as in press releases on the Blackboard site as well as Elluminate and Wimba. In his blog Blackboard Learn president Ray Henderson writes, "For much of the past decade we've seen synchronous education platforms emerging in education. They've always represented the needs of an important niche in education delivery, and are a strong compliment to the asynchronous platforms like Blackboard." (Hits Today: 0 Total: 824)

Exactly, Glen. BBB has made tremendous strides in recent months -- it wasn't quite an Elluminate killer the last time I tried it (a few months ago) but it was getting close. It may be even be there by now.
As I said to a colleague earlier today, what Blackboard is actually doing is the equivalent of cornering the kerosene lamp market in 1878. [Comment]

Great news - we use all three at Swinburne University where I work but the connectivity to Elluminate where I live in St Kilda Road Melbourne is still on candle power - roll out NBN! [Comment]
