Journal of Virtual and Personal Learning Environments
Daniel Livingston, Learning Games, January 16, 2010.

Why do people spend their time creating closed-access journals? I posted the question to Daniel Livingston, who posts on the newly launched Journal of Virtual and Personal Learning Environments, closed access, of which he is an associate editor. On a side note - I am saddened to see the concept of the personal Learning Environment, with which I have been intimately associated since its inception, appropriated for commercial and proprietary use in this way by a publishing company that is contributing nothing to its development. Re: Journal of Virtual and Personal Learning Environments

Hi Stephen,

First, I'm sorry that the journal title itself (and its commercial publication) is upsetting to you. Certainly, I see myself more involved in the 'Virtual and..' side of things, but all the same.

I'll be upfront and say that for nothing if not selfish careerist reasons I'll continue to publish in both open and closed journals and conferences for a good few years coming (assuming that I actually get stuff accepted...). National research evaluation exercises and institutional policies are certainly big drivers there - including personal experience from the last Research Assessment Exercise.

But I've answered your comment on my blog over there in a bit more detail, and you've certainly given me something to mull over. I don't have an answer, but I'm thinking about it. [Comment] [Permalink] [Previous][Next]
