John Connell cites this study from Statistics Canada that refutes the claim that internet use makes people socially isolated. "Research is showing that the Internet is fostering participation with community members and in social organizations. To a great extent, this is basically an enhancement of existing relationships – people now have other media to connect them." I might add that for a significant part of the population - myself among them - the internet has opened vistas for socialization that would never previously have been imagined.
