Google Chrome
Scott McLeod, Google, September 2, 2008.

The big announcement for today is the launch of Google Chrome - at least, it's supposed to happen today, though as of this writing I'm still waiting. I'll have much more coverage and commentary when it actually comes out. What we have in the meantime is this comic-style description of what Chrome will do, drawn by Scott McLeod. Here's Google's announcement of the comic, which was originally "leaked" to a few influential bloggers. (Hits Today: 0 Total: 1198) [Direct Link] [Tags: Google Chrome, Web Logs, Google]

Re: Google Chrome

I read through this comic last night (someone at Read Write Web got the "scoop"). Whether we need a new open source browser or Firefox needs to evolve, I was impressed by how well this comic taught me browser architecture. Great learning material, even if it does enter the gray zone of edumarketing. [Comment] [Permalink] [Previous][Next]

"We are so, so happy with Google Chrome," mumbled Mozilla CEO John Lilly through gritted teeth. "That most of our income is from Google has no bearing on me making this statement." - http://notnews.today.com/?p=57 [Comment] [Permalink] [Previous][Next]

Re: Google Chrome

Its very interesting that Google has decided to take on a project like this. They obviously have such an interest in how people access the web, it was only a matter of time before they took things into their own hands. It is going to be very interesting to see how this pans out.

im not gonna rush things and use google chrome while its in beta. Wait a bit till its stable. Its good that its open source i think. [Comment] [Permalink] [Previous][Next]

Re: Google Chrome

I think google chrome is missing too many things, If you are talking about saving your password , This is no any master password, and your password is visible. [Comment] [Permalink] [Previous][Next]

Re: Google Chrome Master Password - Security Issue

....so much about security - I am really disapointed by Google Chrome. I imported my passwords from Firefox and well on Google Chrome anybody who uses my Computer has access to my passwords now as Google Chrome is not asking for a master password when opening the browser and this to me is a MAJOR SECURITY issue - so after only 4 hours I go back to Firefox..... sorry guys but this is not professional at all I must say!

Re: Google Chrome Master Password

Don't really suffer from that problem myself, I use a private machine, and when I'm away from it I lock it.

Still, for those that do at least it's open source and you can go and add that functionality yourself (somebody's bound to do it).

I like the cleanliness of the interface, I haven't noticed a speed boost, but I haven't had a speed-drop either, I miss mouse gestures (I predominantly use Opera) but other than that I think it beats most other browsers so far (the task manager has been useful already, and I much prefer google's speed-dial to opera's, though I think it could do with more customizability). Re: Google Chrome

Great browser, but not that great for a powerhouse like Google. One great feature in Firefox is the NoScript add on, block unwanted ads, pop ups, and tracking tools used by Google. Maybe these technologies were why Google decided to create its own browser as it posed a direct threat to the primary revenue stream. Look forward to others thoughts. How AJAX apps run in Chrome

I have made a short comparision on how a complex AJAX app works with Chrome, and the other two new beta browsers. See my blog for details...

Re: Google Chrome

This is all a good thing. As I see it, Chrome is not aimed after FF users, but IE users which don't need all those things. FF will just have to learn few things from Chrome, like Task manager. [Comment] [Permalink] [Previous][Next]

Re: Google Chrome

Seeing how big Google is, and with just a link to Google Chrome download on the Google homepage, Google Chrome may get some good market share as it stabilises. It is a very good piece of kit especially for a BETA release, but still a lot of problems including rendering issues. It does go slow, incredibly slow on youtube.com, for instance when watching a video, and even one of my Websites. But a great product from Google, I definitely will be using this full time when theres a stable release. [Comment] [Permalink] [Previous][Next]

Re: Google Chrome

Google Chrome looks good but it seems to have a rather heavy memory footprint. as http://3db.iblogger.org/blog/2008/09/03/google-chrome-new-kid-on-the-block/ points out. Wonder how many older computers can afford to run this kind of a browser. [Comment] [Permalink] [Previous][Next]

Re: Google Chrome

So far I like it. Clean look and the pages seem to load a bit quicker than FF and 2 bits quicker than IE. :) All my websites checked out fine so far.

Inspect Element is smooth. It's early but I'm really liking it. [Comment] [Permalink] [Previous][Next]

Re: Google Chrome

I definitely like Google Chrome, just not being cluttered makes a huge difference to my browsing experience. I definitely think that there should be more functionality though. I also agree that chrome will be a very powerful tool for those who use IE are not heavy app users like FF users. But I think that Chrome, or any other browse,r should come in two modes. One which is basic, and then the advanced one which you can clutter as much as you want! [Comment] [Permalink] [Previous][Next]

Re: Google Chrome

I love it its clean light and faaaast! a little feature light, but this is the first beta release! [Comment] [Permalink] [Previous][Next]

Re: Google Chrome

The browser totally rocks -- but it's missing plugins/addons/extensions (whatever you might call them)... we're an open group trying to create a community of people that are resolving this issue here: http://wearechrome.com/ ... this sounds spammy, and it might be, but we're not in the business of profit, we just want this to succeed! Re: Google Chrome

This move by Google is great news for investors. It demonstrates Google's willingness to go into White Space to compete more aggressively in rapidly shifting markets. Microsoft and other laggard behemoths had better be concerned about a company ready to disrupt existing markets like Google. games???

I tried to play some games on yahoo! It didn't start neither text twist nor Pool... I installed java runtime 6.0 but nothing happened... [Comment] [Permalink] [Previous][Next]

Re: Google Chrome

as for me the best browser design i must say is Apple Safari. very neat and simple. i still have to see other company that can beat Apple when it comes to design. However, Safari is not as powerful as IE or FP. Safari already have the Private Browsing mode (Incognito in Chrome).

A month ago I am a heavy FP user as it was my main browser. now I use Safari for research and checking webmails and FP when security is a much needed thing, and finally IE for websites that say best viewed (and even behave) in IE.

The thing is that there are website developer out there that doesn't care much of other browser and code their website to run properly in IE and vast users out there doesn't care either but use whatever browser that comes with their pc. so as long as Windows OS is the no. 1 in the market FP/Chrome/Safari or any other browsers out there can never defeat IE in distribution and usage. Re: Google Chrome

apparently, most of yahoo games run only in IE 4.0 or later. Tried in FP and Safari it wont work. this website is a best example of why IE still stand no. 1 in the browser war. kids/women loves games and yahoo offers a lot of them so IE will always be the choice.

Re: Google Chrome

Some of the features they advertise in their comics are ridiculous. Processes instead of threads, is that a feature? Come on! Run iexplore.exe several times and there you have as much processes as you want. Their talk about rendering errors is strange. Internet is very well documented. A browser must faithfully comply to the standards, that's all that it should do! As for automated testing on thousands of pages -- testing has taken place of good programming. There were times when algorithms used to be mathematically proven! Of course it's easier to just write something and assume it works until errors pop up. Stable, predictable behavior is not a feature, it's a REQUIREMENT. Instead of trumpeting about basic things developers should concentrate on real features like customizeable keyboard shortcuts for everything, fully customizeable interface, email integration (like new mail checker), conveniently selectable user css pages, zooming, aim/icq/msn and so on. There could be a lot of features specifically for web developers. Heck, if it's going to be a browser of my dream, why make it free? I'd gladly buy it if it had all the things I need. I can't get into Yahoo games with Chrome browser. The chat room/game page opens and says "no plugin available to display this content." Do I have to go back to Internet Explorer to get into Yahoo? [Comment] [Permalink] [Previous][Next]

Re: Google Chrome

It seems like companies that want to be the platform for Desktop Web Applications need to implement a fast JavaScript engine.

Re: Google Chrome

I really miss some cool addons in Chrome. Maybe they will add such functionality, but I'd prefer to be able to use the existing Mozilla addons in Chrome.
QuickJist summarizer, for example, is really incredible. It marks important sentences and summaries on web pages as you browse. If you haven't heard of it, you should check it out: http://www.quickjist.com
I believe Chrome will become extensible too... with time. [Comment] [Permalink] [Previous][Next]

Re: Google Chrome

This is a fantastic piece of software. Very Apple-like in look and feel.

I would recommend this to lots of people.

Bearing in mind it is currently in the Beta Stages, I would say it is doing pretty good. I personally enjoy Google's determination to keep things simple from the end user, no matter how complicated they are in the background.

Aesthetically pleasing, and quite fast. To be honest, all the rest I couldn't care less about.

Well done Google, you've done a great job - keep up the good work. [Comment] [Permalink] [Previous][Next]

Re: Google Chrome

It would really be nice to see a place where one can change and set the home page. I haven't found it.
Also, a simple file>edit>view.. menu bar would make it look more complete. [Comment] [Permalink] [Previous][Next]
