Though this is addressed to a specific tool - Gruepr - it tackles a common problem for online learning: creating groups among people who aren't together and don't really know each other. I used to talk about 'the quest model' in which people would join and leave groups to form specific objectives, and this sometimes works and sometimes doesn't (I can see it fail any time I want by visiting the Nexus in No Man's Sky and looking at the least-used feature in the game, the mission board). Now this tool is a bit less laissez-faire - it has the teachers form groups based on various heuristics, including nationality, gender identity, and more. All of this, of course, is a precursor to what we'll get when we have AI create our groups for us, and how willing we'll be to accept the results of that process. I can't see it taking off in online games (though I could be wrong). In education, it has more of a chance.
