Knowledge, Learning, Community

As a former student journalist, I have a soft spot in my heart for those who toil between and after classes to report on academia, social issues, and even sports and entertainment for their (mostly student) audiences. So sure, kudos to the award winners - but - I can't help but notice the almost complete absence of most of the student newspapers in these awards. There seems to be a place of privilege for students in journalism programs, and those who (somehow) have landed a writing gig in their city's commercial media (in the case of winner Matthew Frank writing for the Winnipeg Free Press even before beginning his program). This doesn't seem right to me. It makes these awards feel like some sort of private club. Maybe next year they can give the Canadian University Press a call and ask about the JHM awards.
