Scott Leslie quite rightly points out that copyright and IP are modern inventions, not some sort of historical fact. I would add that over the last ten years or so they have been greatly extended (at least in rhetoric, but also in some cases by law). And with Leslie I agree that there is an ongoing conflict about public ownership of culture and ideas, and that we must defend our right to be more than simply an employ vessel into which culture is (for a fee) simply poured.
