This is the problem with application-specific APIs - when one or the other upgrades, communications are interrupted. I've seen this with module or plug-in based architectures generally, from Firefox to Moodle to WordPress to Drupal. Just a note of caution regarding this model. Modular is good; proprietary (and hence endlessly variable) breaks that good.
