7 Things You Should Know About Personal Learning Environments

ELI describes the personal learning environment (PLE). A PLE "describes the tools, communities, and services that constitute the individual educational platforms learners use to direct their own learning and pursue educational goals. A PLE is frequently contrasted with a learning management system in that an LMS tends to be course-centric, whereas a PLE is learner-centric." The 'who is doing it' section is a shameful display of ineptitude. The 'how does it work' section misrepresents the PLE as "instructors or institutions generally provide a framework for student study." Don't save this one; the author doesn't understand the concept, and it shows. Via Bryan Alexander. Unattributed, EDUCAUSE ELI, May 19, 2009 2:59 p.m.. [Link] 49010 [Previous][Next]

Re: 7 Things You Should Know About Personal Learning Environments

Do you not think, though, that for many Institutions making the move from a VLE / LMS / some centralised system or another, and, indeed for the students concerned, they often need a framework.
I've thought of PLEs as a bit like lego ...
Stage 1: everyone gets the same house ... you just get to pick the colour & maybe whether it's a bungalow or a house. (That's the level of Customisation many VLEs offer ... students can change the colour)

Stage 2: You get a bag of lego, with a base plate, some wall bricks, roof bits, doors windows etc - and a fairly good framework to show you what the critical bits are, but also to allow you to customise it.
(That's the PLE that I think that ELI are describing)

Stage 3: You teach students to build with lego, encourage them to experiment with bits they'd not thought of using in particular ways, to use other building bricks they've got kicking around that fit (and have to work out how to include bits that don't stick together)
That's, I suspect, the ideal PLE BUT ... not all students are actually that interested in building them - they'd rather be getting on with learning physics/latin/whatever; and not all staff are able to give the support that students need to get going themselves.
