The Reciprocity Economy
One thing people tend to get wrong about networks is to interpret them as some sort of economy or value proposition. For example, Martin Weller writes, "It seems to me that what we're discovering is that like any economy (and economy doesn't have to mean money, natural selection arises because of nature's economy) establishing any 'wealth' requires effort, time or innovation." But I think this metaphor is really misleading. As I write in the comments, "It's not about reciprocity. It's about sharing. Completely different concept." Martin Weller, The Ed Techie, April 13, 2009. [Link] [Tags: Networks] [Previous][Next]Comments
Re: The Reciprocity Economy
Uhuh! Ive been calling it service...serving others by sharing knowledge, resources, passion, care etc. That's how I see it.The sharing is critical alongside authenticity(transparency?). People such as yourself are raising collective intelligence so truly sharing is the word. People instinctively feel whether someone wants something in return and that is a turn off for my participation online and off.I like the sharing word because it's so linked with the caring word...imagine a caring economy. Re: The Reciprocity Economy
To me it shows two completely different philosophies:
1) Altruism / open / doing good / gregarious / catholic? - giving, caring, appreciating for free, without further expectations. The recording is doing somewhere else! You will be paid with heaven!
2) Protestant / capitalist / the recording accountant / individualist / self-centred - to earn heaven you need to do something worthwhile on earth, you have to accumulate to demonstrate your worthiness: I have done this! Here is the proof!
no time to further elaborate! [Comment]
