Education 2.0 Business Models

Good overview of web 2.0 business models as applied to e-learning. I guess my overall reaction is disappointment at the thought that people still do not see the social value in providing learning for free, and must seek still to 'monetize' e-learning initiatives. I've been reading Al Gore's The Assault on Reason to day and am compelled to think that the disaster that happens when democracy is for sale is nothing compared to what will happen when learning is for sale. Re: Education 2.0 Business Models

The marginal cost of one more user on an e-learning system is so small that there is really no excuse for monetizing through advertising, sponsorship or sneaky upsells. Our assessment platform http://yacapaca.com/ is one of several systems now that are genuinely, completely free. In our case it pays for itself purely in optional support charges to schools. We are not going to get rich that way, but it does quite adequately cover the cost of providing the service even though only a proportion of schools choose to pay for support.
