How Rude! Use Of WiFi Networks At Conferences

Well this is one of those issues where the 'generations' (I use the word very loosely) collide. I frequently give talks at networked conferences, and I always use my laptop when I'm in the audience. I don't mind if people surf while I'm talking; I don't get offended. People are busy these days, and when I'm talking to a hundred people I'm guaranteed to be telling some people stuff they already know and other people stuff they don't need to know. I can amuse the rest with fluff and funny stories and self-depreciating jokes, or I can provide the best material I can and let people pick and choose what parts of my talk they'll pay attention to. I figure, it's their dime, they can make the call. Brian Kelly, UK Web Focus, May 12, 2008 2:21 p.m.. [Link] 44522 [Previous][Next]

i´m afraid I am way too slow to pay attention to two trends of thought simultaneously. Still I admire those who can.I guess it´s like a jigsaw puzzle those who work in their computers and attend a lecture put the pieces together afterwards. And are successful!

The post begins my stating how his colleague's typing was annoying the other participants. I can attest that this can be distracting. Some people are feather-typers and other are pounders. The pounders can interfere with my enjoyment of the presentation.

I hate to discriminate against pounders, though. We need more keyboards with pounder buffers, to lessen the impact of these spirited typists. Perhaps conferences can distribute typing mufflers that encase the user's arms and computer in a clear, sound-proof wrap.

Surfing the Web isn't a problem, but pounding out your responses sure can be :) [Comment] [Permalink] [Previous][Next]
