DimDim

It has been some time coming, but open-source web conferencing tool DimDim is now publicly available. It's still a beta, and some really desirable features - like desktop sharing and meeting recording - aren't available. But what it does - like Power Point slide show sharing (5 meg limit) and whiteboard, it seems to do well, albeit with a couple second latency. Considering the price of the competition, this free alternative is definitely worth a look.

Re: DimDim

I have been trying out dimdim with my students here in Iceland and desktop sharing seem to be working fine. You have to make sure you are not sharing both ppt and desktop at the same time, you can not do that.

The five user limitation has been removed from the Open Source version. [Comment] [Permalink] [Previous][Next]

The Dimdim open source edition is meant … for usage in Non-Critical Environments. Why?

A true virtual class!

The DimDim license is GPL, hosted on sourceforge. It's an Open Source Solution.

Uncommon: the official website explains that "The Dimdim open source edition is meant … for usage in Non-Critical Environments … The Enterprise Edition is a much more stable, scalable and reliable piece of software which is fully supported and certified by Dimdim, the company. The Open source community supports the Open Source edition".

The company provides you with professional services regarding technical bugs and helps you with the tool. I find this Business Model unhealthy. It harms the other open source solutions. Users confuse increasingly free and "poorly finished product." This is not the concept of open source.

Re: DimDim

We tried the free alternatives before trying and buying RHUB's TurboMeeting. TurboMeeting was on par with GoToMeeting and WebEx in terms of features and performance. But RHUB sells an appliance that makes it cheaper than a few months of WebEx. Plus RHUB includes remote support. Check them out at: http://www.rhubcom.com/ [Comment] [Permalink] [Previous][Next]
