The VLE/LMS Is Dead
Martin Weller,
The Ed Techie, November 9, 2007.
"We'll probably take five years to realise it," writes Martin Weller, but "I think this shift to loosely coupled, freely available third party systems will happen. It won't happen overnight, and it will follow a succession model, but I would place money on this being the direction things take." A pretty good overview of the weaknesses of the LMS, and the post has sparked an engaging conversation in the comments.

Re: The VLE/LMS Is Dead
I have to agree with the one comment that basically states that most educators are not really that interested in IT and therefore will continue to use whatever system is provided to them by the institution. There will certainly be those mavericks who will provide their students a more interesting learning environment using third party apps, but I believe this will be the exception and not the norm.
In some ways I think an opensource LMS like MOODLE is a great example of why I believe Martin to be wrong. With such a large open community contributing to this project, there are constantly interesting new apps available to address a wide array of instructor/teacher environments. Which is somewhat analogous to his third party app idea in the end.
Also, my guess is that, as soon as a few inovative teachers latch onto a cool new set of tools, someone will be looking to package them for the rest of us, and profiting in the process. [Comment]
