Organisational Learning Today - Concept Map
Mark Berthelemy, Mark Berthelemy's Connections, September 24, 2007.

Interesting diagram summarizing 'organizational learning'. The term, of course, is a misnomer - it is the people who are in the organizations that are learning. So what's the 'organizational' doing in there? Sections like culture' and 'performance standards' give us an idea. Perhaps we should call it 'managed learning'. But then the informal learning doesn't fit.

Re: Organisational Learning Today - Concept Map

Hi Stephen,

Yes, perhaps "Organisational Learning" is a misnomer - but it is very definitely about how organisations can support learning. Part of that is developing a culture that is supportive & expects learning. Part of that is in the performance management systems (not sure where you got "performance standards" from).

I disagree totally that we should call it "managed learning". Just because it's coming from a corporate perspective doesn't mean that the corporation should manage learning. Instead the organisation should be looking at how to provide a direction for learning, and, at the same time, support the individual learning needs of the people in the organisation. Re: Organisational Learning Today - Concept Map

Stephen,

I must agree with Mark when he says that the term "Managed Learning" is inappropriate. This term seems to imply that all aspects of learning in the organization can be managed and this is not the case. How can an organization manage informal learning? They cannot decide who will share waht no more that they can decide when or where. But they can sure facilitate it by creating a proper environment, by providing them with opportunities to share knowledge.

To me the term "Oganizational Learning" sounds right because even though this is the members of the organization who learn, in the end, this is the kowledge of the organization as a whole that grows.
