Picassa Web Album

Commentary by Stephen Downes

I am testing the new Google Picassa Web Album service - Google's competition to Flickr. I have always really liked Picassa, and people will appreciate the nifty photo editing tools that are included. The web album isn't much of an imprivement on Flickr, though I appreciate the larger image size (I always felt Flickr could display the photos a lot better). Total: 263

Re: Picassa Web Album

A nicer pure presentation of the photos than Flickr, for sure...but no community? [Comment] [Permalink]

Re: Picassa Web Album

Well I thought about that. And I asked myself, do we need another community? Or should we tie it into Orkut? And I thought, none of this is really what we want. Community should be distributed. It should be not offered as a part of a service, it should exist between individuals and not depend on them using Flickr or Google or whatever. Sure, community should be reflected in a service like Picassa Web. But only reflected, only as a way of looking at the wider set of relations on the internet. [Comment] [Permalink]
