Instructure Canvas Integrates with Microsoft Teams to Keep Educators, Students, and Administrators Connected
Instructure, 2020/03/17

This was probably intended to be revealed several months from now (I read on a discussion list it didn't exist a week ago). And I imagine some people have been pulling some all-nighters to get this running. I can't say I'm surprised, as several people have pointed to the expansion of Teams into the education space. "Canvas customers with Microsoft accounts can create audio and video conference calls (meetings) using the Microsoft Teams integration with Canvas for free (Microsoft Teams is included in Office 365 A1, which is free for educational institutions). The integration provides an easy way to create a Microsoft Teams Meeting from within the Canvas LMS Rich Content Editor, calendar, discussions, pages, or assignments." Get started here.

JavaScript Face Detection with face-api.js
Dylan Schiemann, InfoQ, 2020/03/17

The existence of a Javascript library for face detection like this suggests to me that it's only a matter of time before your average website begins to ask permission to recognize you by face, using your video camera. No doubt some applications won't ask (I think websites have to ask, otherwise the browser won't give them access to the video camera).

Google Classroom Bootcamp Duo Demo: Student and Teacher Views
Vicki Davis, Cool Cat Teacher Blog, 2020/03/17

I hadn't seen this done before. "Alice Keeler sat down with me recently to do what we’re calling a 'duo demo.' She played the role of the teacher and I played the role of the student as we shared what various actions look like on both sides of the dynamic relationship between students and teachers in Google Classroom." Good idea.

A Note From the Editors
Chronicle of Higher Education, 2020/03/17

The Chronicle of Higher Education is opening up their breaking coverage during the crisis, which is good. But they're still requiring that you given then your personal information before allowing to to see their guide on how to keep teaching during Coronavirus, which is greedy. Bad, Chronicle, bad.

On track to a standard model
Daniel C. Dennett, Cognitive Neuropsychology, 2020/03/17

This is a short commentary on a paywalled article (Graziano, et.al., Toward a standard model of consciousness). We can only get the gist, but there are some interesting nuggets, most notably, the discinction theween i-consciousness, which is the self-awareness we actually have, and m-consciousness we think we have. Science explains the former, and at least a part of the problem of consciousness is explaining the latter. And that problem is solved (at least in part) by learning theory.

Here's Dennett: "We human beings aren’t born knowing how to talk about, or direct our attention to, or discriminate...our subjective experiences. There has to be a process that is both cognitive and social that sculpts our ability to “introspect” and even as adults we can discover embarrassing gaps of “ineffability” that can be filled in with training and practice. Acquiring all those talents installs cognitive machinery in our brains that is useful not just for sharing experiences with our family and friends, but for controlling our attention in myriad ways."
