Meta one-ups competitors, introducing an AI text-to-video tool
Blathnaid O’Dea, Silicon Republic, 2022/09/30

Given that video is no more than a series of related images, this isn't as big a leap as you might think, though it no doubt requires a lot more computing power (as video does generally). Still, it shows how rapidly AI is moving into the creative space. "Meta revealed its new text-to-video tool yesterday (29 September) with a cutesy clip of a teddy bear painting a self-portrait on a canvas. The text prompt used was 'a teddy bear painting a portrait'." Of course, this might all be a sham. Would we expect anything less from Facebook? "As The Verge pointed out, Meta is not currently allowing anyone access to the model."

uOCompetencies
University of Ottawa, 2022/09/30

From the website: "The University of Ottawa used a participatory methodology to develop this institutional competency framework... By establishing a common vocabulary for the development of learning outcomes for all learning activities, we can help students better understand the competencies they can acquire throughout their academic career." The full presentation (14 page PDF) describes them in more detail. I've seen many such lists over the years (and contributed my own), and while this is a better-than-average example of the species, I doubt that it's the last word on the subject, making the idea of establishing a 'common vocabulary' a but overly ambitious.

A musician picked up on an AI ‘baby’ to harmonize with — and his latest experiment could usher in a brave, new world of art
Jessica Martins, Cryptosaurus, 2022/09/30

This article highlights a tool launched by Holly Herndon called Holly+ "that enables other artists to create music using the AI-generated likeness of their voice. Works created using Holly+ are essentially outspoken deepfakes approved and encouraged by Herndon." Think of it like autotunes but for harmonization using Herndon's own voice. The point being argued here is that  "instead of rejecting new technology, everyone from workers to businesses, to amateur creators, can learn to use these tools to make their lives easier or open up new creative avenues. By adopting AI, skeptics can help ensure that growing technology is used for good, not left to shape by ill-intentioned parties." The original article is from Business Insider and hidden behind a paywall.

Why you should avoid Prioritization Frameworks
Saeed Khan, Medium, 2022/09/30

Icon

A 'prioritization framework' is a mechanism whereby " Product Managers or product teams... score each feature or initiative on the factors in the framework, then plug those scores into a formula to come to an overall score for each feature." Instead of prioritizing features, Saeed Khan argues, "You should be focused on prioritizing problems and opportunities that are tied to higher level goals and strategies."
