US, partner countries launch declaration for the internet
Dee Harris, Creative Commons, 2022/04/29

I'm not sure what this means, over and above policy posturing, and I'm not sure why it was needed now, exactly, but this 'Declaration for the Future of the Internet', signed by 60 democratic countries around the world, is worth noting. "Partners in this Declaration intend to work toward an environment that reinforces our democratic systems and promotes active participation of every citizen in democratic processes, secures and protects individuals' privacy, maintains secure and reliable connectivity, resists efforts to splinter the global Internet, and promotes a free and competitive global economy." A New PLN Opportunity: Tooting for #Mastodon #Fediverse and 5 Tips
Miguel Guhlin, Around the Corner, 2022/04/29

The flood of new people into Mastodon continues apace. This article is a quick introduction to Mastodon in particular and the fediverse in general (I'm still waiting for the definitive how-to though - something that covers not just Mastodon but all the elements of the fediverse, how to work with them, and how to link them all together). See also this short video on Framatube (another part of the fediverse). Related: Ben Werdmuller on Mastodon and the future of Twitter.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Earth Monitoring
FutureLearn, 2022/04/29

I just completed slides and a video for a conference in Iran (I'll make these available May 20) with various predictions for the future of the MOOC. One think I noted was that they would be using real-time data to provide authentic learning experiences. I always complain when other people predict things that are already happening, so I'll take note here of this FutureLearn course where participants use AI to work with Copernicus open data. "On this course, you'll get a comprehensive overview of the Copernicus Programme and the wealth of EO data it provides, as well as how AI and ML are transforming the interpretation of EO data." This is pretty challenging advanced stuff (at least to me) but might be just the thing I can imagine spending a lot of time working on (if I had a lot of time, that is).  Via Copernicus EU.

Learning Synths - Playground
Ableton, 2022/04/29

One of my rules for OLDaily is that if something eats an hour of my time, I post it here so it'll eat an hour of your time too. Today's instance of that rule in action is this website, which took me step by step through a number of common synthesizer elements. You can simply play with the synth tool, or you can (as I did) work your way through the explanations, starting here. No, you won't know how to play the synthesizer after an hour - but you will know what people are talking about when they talk about the 'brightness' of a sound. I really liked the interactive aspects of this tutorial: you manipulate controls and both see and hear what they're talking about (days like this I wish I had another lifetime just to explore and create electronic music). 100 Digital Questions Answered
culturehive, Arts Marketing Association, 2022/04/29

Launched yesterday, this is an extensive resource that "answers small to medium-sized heritage organisation's most pressing and frequently asked digital questions." It's divided into four themes of 25 questions each, ranging from "How can I undertake digital marketing on a budget?" to "Is there a digital strategy template I can use?" Each question may have several resources listed in responses, and resources are rates by three levels of expertise. The website isn't finished yet; you'll find the questions in the fourth theme unanswered, for example. I guess ideally it would be a living resource, with answers constantly being added and updated.
