Society: Empowering students as they negotiate digital literacy, identity, and socioemotional learning at the 2023 Annual Conference of the Palmetto State Literacy Association.

Some background

A 21st-century educational system must educate all students in the effective and authentic use of the technologies that permeate society to prepare them for the future. In the past, our educational system emphasized the use of traditional tools such as textbooks, chalkboards, overhead projectors, ring binders, and composition books. Now, however, our culture has embraced vastly new and dynamically changing media in everyday life.

Learners now have opportunities to no longer simply “read” such media but become more discerning end users and potentially innovative “writers” of new media themselves.

The challenge that we’re presented with is a need to build the critical components of world-class knowledge, world-class skills necessary for college and career while building the citizenship and humility characteristics needed for life.

To understand these shifts we employ theoretical perspectives from new literacies, critical literacy, and socio-emotional learning.

The intention of the Profile of the SC Graduate is that it provides a “30,000 foot view” of the state’s desired learning outcomes. In order to bring this high-level view down to earth, it is also important that we have more specific tools to support teachers and students in the journey to grow World Class Knowledge, World Class Skills, and Life and Career Characteristics. 

Please note, this was codified into law and mandated by the SC legislature.

To make sense of social and emotional learning (SEL) in the context of the Profile of the SC Graduate, the SC DoE worked with the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) to complete a crosswalk to examine connections and opportunities for instruction. Which Profile of a South Carolina Graduate competencies provide opportunities to learn and practice the CASEL Competencies?

This self-assessment is a great starting point to think about SEL in your own practice.
