Michael Feldstein is participating in the development of "a new courseware platform" and reaping the benefits of deeper insight into learning and development as a result. The layer between content and analytics, he writes, is meaning - software develoeprs call it the 'information model', but my own experience is that this is only half the story; that's the structure, but there's also what logicians would call the 'interpretation' of the data. That's important because while structure can be shared, interpretation varies significantly with context (which is why Asians and Europeans might not immediately recognize his telephone number example). Interpretation also has a lot to do with intent (which makes the 'pedagogical intent' part of the new platform important, but would also make learner intent equally important).
