Notes Page for Slide OBJ-N16

Specific learning objectives are written for courses and lessons. They can be used as is or be subdivided into several more specific learning objectives when planning individual lessons .

Remember they define what learners should know or be able to do by the end of the course or lesson. It is the instructor who must plan lessons that teach students to reach the level indicated in the objective. For example, in the objective

  • Learners will be able to calculate the amount of interest

the instructor must plan a lesson (lessons) that will teach knowledge of interest, comprehension of interest before students can be taught how to calculate the amount of interest.

Specific learning objectives are all measurable and/or observable.

The number of specific learning objectives for each general objective is between 2-8. There is no exception regarding the lower number. If there are not a minimum of two objectives, there is not enough content for a major topic. The higher number is somewhat flexible.

There are no rules for order in which the objectives must be taught. It depends on the content and the instructor.
