The Shaded Square

A planned lesson, when it is taught, is fluid. It changes for many reasons. It can be liken to someone standing in a stream. The flowing water is never the same as moments before. There are numerous reasons for this fluidity.

There is the interaction of the:

  • Instructor and content
  • Instructor and the teaching strategies
  • Instructor and the learners
  • Learners and content
  • Learners and learning strategies
  • Learners and their past experiences
  • Learners and their personal perceptions of learning opportunities and barriers
  • Learners and their personal goals and expectations
  • Learners and their personal educational attitudes
  • Learners and their personal self-evaluation (self-esteem)

The shading in the box is a metaphor of constant change. No place in the square is the same as another place.
