Overview of Evaluation Methods

Lets us review what we have done in this course so far. The objectives are written, the content is selected and sequenced, and the instructional methods are chosen. Now the evaluation instrument(s) must be selected. It is important to remember that any evaluation instrument chosen must reflect the course or lesson objectives as well as how the content was taught. For example, if the objectives uses the verb "list" then the evaluation instrument chosen must ask learners to list. There are many instruments that can do this including an essay, short answer, and rearranging lists. Choosing the instrument will depend on a number of factors - these are discussed in this section.

There are numerous evaluation instruments. They can be divided into formal and informal; and diagnostic, formative, and summative and these will be discussed here in this section.

The following objectives for this section are:

  1. Learners will become familiar with a variety of evaluation instruments
  2. Learners will be able to classify a number of evaluation strategies
  3. Learners will be able to describe the relationship between objectives and evaluation

There are five parts to evaluation instruments. They are:

  1. Introduction to evaluation instruments
  2. Kinds of evaluation
  3. Classifying evaluation instruments
  4. The selection of evaluation instruments
  5. The relationship between evaluation instruments and objectives
