Kinds of Evaluation

DIAGNOSTIC - It is the gathering of evidence of what is known and what is not learned

  • Completed prior to the beginning of the course, lesson, unit of study, or when there is evidence that the learners are struggling.
  • Completed at the start of a learning activity.
  • It could be used as part of anecdotal reporting.
  • Never used as part of learners' marks.

FORMATIVE - Means forming up during instruction.

  • Completed continually throughout the instruction, not at the end of the instruction.
  • Its purpose is to improve instruction and learning not to rank or grade students.
  • Used to help learners to better learn the current content and/or skills.
  • It is a conscious plan to pause and assess how learning is progressing.
  • It is an analysis and diagnosis of what skills must yet be learned
  • It is used to provide records that will form part of a summative evaluation

SUMMATIVE- Means summary after instruction.

  • Used afterwards or at the end of the course, unit of study, term, or program.
  • Used to judge learning after the learning is ended
  • Used to make a decision
  • Based on the objectives, how are the learners overall performances
  • Summarize the change that occurred as a result of instruction
